How to Fix a Laptop Internet Connection?

In this detailed guide, I’m going to share with you some detailed processes on How to Fix a Laptop Internet Connection?

You are in midst of something and suddenly your internet connection goes off. Instead of raging, you should find the source of the problem, right? There might be several reasons behind the disconnection, however, some problems can only be resolved from the Internet Service Provider’s end.

Most often the issue is within our reach and we can shoot them out.

This guide will let you know about such wired connectivity problems and how to resolve them.

Before starting any resolving method, try to open various websites. This step is required as some browser extensions might refrain the website from opening or some particular website might be temporarily down that day. Disable all the extensions and open an incognito tab to rule out the above-said problem.

Let’s divide this guide into basic and advanced fixes. We’ll start with basic fixes.

Basic Internet Troubleshooting: How to Fix a Laptop Internet Connection?

Step 1: Restart your computer

Restarting your computer can fix lots of problems. When you reset it out, all the wrong settings that were causing network issues will vanish automatically. It usually happens when your computer is running for a long time.

Step 2: Make sure your laptop’s wireless adapter is enabled

Many variants of laptops have a switch that turns on/off the wireless adapter. If it gets pressed accidentally while typing on the keyboard it disconnects the network from the computer.

Toggle the switch to turn it on. In some laptops, you have to hold the Fn button to make the wireless work, it’s also called the Wi-Fi button.

If the above method doesn’t works then try to reinstall the driver.

Step 3: Restart your Internet modem and router

Due to the continuous running, the Internet modem or router sometimes becomes unresponsive. Simply pull the plug out and plug it again after few seconds. Restart it and check whether the problem persists or not.

Step 4: Execute a soft reset on your network.

Reset your modem settings from the IP of your router. From a web browser log in to your home router as an administrator.

Once logged in, from the advanced options click on Reboot. It usually takes 30 to 60 seconds for the router to restart on its own.

Step 5: Execute the hard reset on your network.

If the soft reset doesn’t works then do a hard reset which changes everything to default. The Network name and password also get back to factory settings. Set your old password while reconnecting again.

For hard reset press the reset button of the modem or router for 30 seconds. The button may be hidden under a pinhole, press with a thin and hard object.

Step 6: Check the distance

Bring the router or modem closer to your computer and try again. If there are many obstacles in between like a group of walls then you shouldn’t expect a steady internet connection.

Step 7: Try the wired connection

Use the RJ45 Ethernet port to get faster and reliable internet connectivity, it isolates all other wireless problems that you were facing. Here you won’t have to worry about the ISP or obstacles.

Moreover, if the internet is working properly while connecting to the router then the problem lies within the wireless power adapter. And if the internet works properly while connecting to the modem, then the problem is likely with the router.

Remove all the devices from the router and modem before starting the troubleshoot as a faulty network card will destroy the entire network.

After the troubleshoot, if the problem persists then there is no other option left but to contact the ISP provider.
